Whether you are planning a day trip to Bainbridge Island or a loop around the whole Olympic Peninsula, you'll want a copy of the newest, most comprehensive travel guidebook for the region: Across the Sound: A Guide to Interesting Places West of Puget Sound by Ron Konzak and Mickey Molnaire (2004, Wind Harp Press, ISBN 0-9744632-0-5, $19.95).

When it comes to tourism in Kitsap County, Ron Konzak and Mickey Molnaire wrote the book. Literally. Across the Sound may be the only travel book to focus exclusively on the charms and attractions on Bainbridge Island, the Kitsap and Olympic Peninsulas, Hood Canal and Vashon Island. (Rhonda Parks Manville, Bainbridge Island Review, January 2, 2005)

Are you a railroad buff? A history enthusiast? Looking for gardens or wineries or light- houses? Like to learn more about Native American culture? A subject index lists these areas of interest and many more, from outdoor sports to whale watching, waterfalls, museums, and attractions for kids.

The first half of this informative and entertaining book features short, narrative chapters on various destinations and attractions, each containing descriptions, stories, personal observations, a little history and local color.

The second half is a comprehensive appendix providing event calendars by month and location, information on climate and weather, flora and fauna, geology, restaurants, lodging, a place-name pronunciation guide, and suggestions for where to ride a bicycle, go bird watching and play golf. The book includes maps and a chart that gives mileage and travel-time estimates for every destination listed. Web sites are included whenever available as well as a list of public library locations where visitors traveling without their own computers can access the Internet.

"We wrote this guidebook because there wasn't anything like it," said Konzak, "and our guests were asking for this information." They provided guests with draft copies of the chapters and invited them to field-test them.

Husband and wife Ron Konzak and Mickey Molnaire own Fuurin-Oka Futon and Breakfast on Bainbridge Island -- a traditional Japanese guest house -- which they have been running for six years. They themselves enjoy traveling and living in different places around the world. Konzak and Molnaire previously teamed up to write a whimsical cookbook, The Book of Ramen: Lowcost Gourmet Meals Using Instant Ramen Noodles (1993, Turtleback Books). Konzak's first book was a self-help workbook, Lifegraph, (1985, Metamorphous Press) complete with a nine-foot-long, accordion-folded graph for plotting important life events.

With 60 years on Bainbridge Island between them and a love of local exploration, they have discovered "some really neat places" over the years and in the three years of intense research while writing Across the Sound. They dedicate the book to their many guests "who help to keep us continuously aware of the beautiful, magical place in which we live."
